How to style with matte clay, step by step
Step 1: Start with damp, towel-dried hair. Matte clay works best on hair that is damp but not soaking wet. If you just got out of the shower, towel-dry aggressively first. If your hair is bone-dry, mist it lightly with water from a spray bottle.
Step 2: Scoop a pea-sized amount for short hair, up to almond-sized for medium. Matte clay is potent. Too much makes hair look flat and heavy. Less is better for the first pass.
Step 3: Warm it up between your palms for 10 seconds. Cold clay doesn't distribute. Warm it until it turns slick and translucent, then spread it evenly across both palms and fingers.
Step 4: Work it in from back to front. Start at the back and sides where hair is thickest, then move to the top. Use fingers, not a comb. Push and shape the hair in the direction you want it to sit as you go.
Step 5: Shape the style. Push up and back for a lifted, textured look. Push forward for a fringe. Twist small sections between fingers for extra separation. Matte clay locks whatever position you leave the hair in.
