What each one is
Shaving soap starts as a hard puck or a firm cake pressed into a tin. You load a wet brush against the surface, work up lather in a bowl or on your face, and paint it on. Traditional format, tallow- or vegetable-based, triple-milled if it's done right. The Holy Black Artisan Shaving Soap is our version, scented with bay rum, whisky, and lime.
Shaving cream is a soft, whipped emulsion that comes ready to lather. You scoop a small amount, work it into a brush, and lather from there. Faster to get going than a hard soap. The Holy Black Shaving Cream is built from scratch with the same protective glide as our soap, just in a different format.
Neither one is the aerosol foam you get from a can at the drugstore. Both use real ingredients that hydrate skin instead of coating it with silicone and drying it out.

When to reach for shaving soap

How to actually use each
Soap:
- Soak your brush in warm water for 30 seconds, then shake out the excess.
- Swirl the wet brush directly onto the soap for 20 seconds. You'll see it build up.
- Move the loaded brush to a bowl or straight to your face. Paint in small circles until the lather turns thick and doesn't drip.
- Shave.
Cream:
- Wet your brush and shake out the excess the same way.
- Scoop about a nickel-sized amount into a bowl or onto the brush directly.
- Whip in small circles for 10-15 seconds until it turns into a rich, cushiony lather.
- Paint onto your face and shave.
Both formats work with the same brush. If you're just starting, a synthetic shave brush is more forgiving than badger while you figure out your rhythm.

If we had to pick one, we'd tell most guys to start with the cream and graduate to the soap if they end up loving the routine. The cream shortens the learning curve without sacrificing the shave. Once you know what a good lather feels like, the soap gives you more control and lasts twice as long.
Guys who already know they want the full ritual should skip straight to the soap. It's the format traditional barbers used for a reason.
